Therapy

June 27, 2024 By Dave Kaplowitz, LMFT

Insight-oriented talk therapy involves talking about the emotionally significant aspects of your life in order to better understand your situation and how you got here. By talking through your problems therapeutically, it is possible to gain a new perspective and approach life in a different way.

There are many reasons to start therapy and many ways that therapy can help. Some people want to improve specific relationships, others are dealing with specific emotional problem such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, or perhaps they have gotten a psychiatric diagnosis such as Autism or ADHD. Some people start therapy because of career dissatisfaction. Others have a vague sense that things just aren’t right and want more out of their lives. Many people are looking to take stock of where they are gain a deeper understanding of life’s mysteries.

Difficult Emotions

People often seek therapy because they have difficult emotions that interfere with daily life. You might be struggling with anxiety, grief, depression, persistent anger, or may contend with periodic panic attacks. Often medication can help but even the best medications don’t make these problems go away and often have bothersome side effects. Therapy can help people do better at tolerating intense emotions and learn how to manage difficult situations better.

The unexamined life is not worth living.

Relationships

While relationships are a significant part of our lives, they are fraught with difficulty. Often the best relationships have periods when they are challenging. Conflicts can arise with our spouses, romantic parters, siblings, children, extended family, friends, or coworkers. Sometimes we can see patterns across all of our relationships or sometimes different people bring out different parts of ourselves. Sometimes our closest relationships are the most problematic and other times our difficulties are with people we see only occasionally. Usually people seek therapy to improve relationships with those closest to them such as a romantic partner, siblings, or parents.

Career

We spend a lot of our time working. These days with cell phones and laptops, work is accessible 24/7. Some people are looking to have a better work/life balance. Others are looking for greater career satisfaction but don’t know how to move forward.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
